Cari & David: St. Maarten Wedding

Cari and David's Commitment

“…And they lived happily ever after.” These are the words we learned as children when we read Cinderella, Snow White, and other favorite stories. As young girls, we believed every word of these fairy tales. More important, from that point on many of us began looking for Prince Charming and expecting our own happy endings.Never did we imagine the planning that would be involved in preparing for those fantasy weddings we’d grown up hearing about. The truth is, most brides don’t miraculously get that perfect wedding—it takes hard work and planning.
Cari, a fashion editor for an up-and-coming magazine, faced great challenges when planning her wedding. When a devastating storm hit Mexico, Cari suddenly had to change her wedding date and location. Not only did she have to reschedule her wedding, she also had to resend the invitations. But she took things in stride.

Cari in love

The word “Bridezilla” will never be used to describe Cari. She was the most pleasant, friendly, loving, and considerate bride I’ve had the honor of working with. I was expecting the worst under these extreme circumstances; never did I imagine it would be such a wonderful experience to work with Cari. I have worked with brides without even a fraction of the drama Cari went through, who behaved badly. Cari, however, maintained her cool and dignity in the face of every obstacle that arose on the road to her wedding. I was honored to be a part of her wedding, and to be considered part of her family.

Cari’s engagement party was the beginning of the chain of events that might have caused someone less together to throw in the towel. Several weeks before the scheduled soirée, she got a call from the owner of the restaurant she’d reserved for the celebration, saying they’d overbooked and were unable to accommodate her and her wedding party. Cari then found another location for the event, only to receive a call one week before the event saying they were going out of business.

Fortunately, she was able to find another location to accommodate the party, and the event was a smash. Something like this might have sent the average bride-to-be to a padded room. But not Cari; with the help of her family and friends, she was able to stay focused and make the best of what would have thrown most people for a loop. After the engagement-party snafus, just when everything seemed to be going great, Cari’s mother phoned with bad news: her grandfather had passed away. Though his passing was not a surprise—her grandfather had been sick for some time—it was of course very disappointing and painful for Cari. But still she managed to stay on track. Then, one week before the wedding, Cari’s maid of honor was hospitalized with an allergic reaction to a medication. Despite her hectic schedule, Cari, being the friend she is, did all she could to be there for her best friend. Her parents continued to be supportive to her in her time of need, as parents tend to be. And Cari’s maid of honor once again proved the strength of their friendship by fulfilling expectations and her role even during her own personal crisis. (Maids of honor, take note!)

Cari and international guestCari’s graceful handling of the challenges she faced while planning her wedding should serve as an example for—and encouragement to—brides-to-be everywhere. The key to this union was not the event itself, but the people involved in making it happen: David and Cari, of course, but also their loving, supportive family and closest friends, who have always been there for the couple, and who will continue to do so as they make their new life together. And of course, Cari never lost sight of the most important things: David, and their love and passion for each other.

Cake At long last, and surrounded by those who love them, Cari and David were married on April 1, 2006, in the island of St. Maarten, at the beautiful La Samanna Hotel. Cari had somehow found the time and patience, while rescheduling and replanning her wedding and dealing with personal crises, to tend to all the details for her guests. For instance, she arranged for any guests traveling on American Airlines to receive a discount; they simply had to mention that they were with Cari and David’s wedding party when they called to book their flights. She also arranged for three different hotels to accommodate all of their wedding guests: the Wyndham Sapphire Beach Club and Resort, the Caravanserai Beach Resort, and La Samanna Hotel. All three proved to be great hotels, ready to serve and care for Cari and David’s guests. Cari even took care of entertainment: each guest, upon checking in, received a gift bag from the couple containing an itinerary. Those who came a day before the wedding were invited to the rehearsal dinner with Cari and David’s wedding party, family, and friends. And on the day of the wedding, guests were picked up at their hotels and shuttled to the wedding site.

The ceremony itself was planned in detail by Sharon Remy of Sint Maarten Marry-Me, and Cari’s hair and makeup were done by Miguel of Miguel's Salon at the Atrium Hotel. The island proved to be paradise, the natives warm and caring, and Cari was able to have the beautiful, perfect wedding she’d always dreamed of. It was really one of the best weddings I’ve ever been to. Through richer and poorer, through good and bad times, love will stand the test of time. And Cari and David will live happily ever after.
