Choosing the Perfect Flowers
Shakespeare said it best, “A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.” But Shakespeare wasn’t planning a wedding. The floral design world is a place where appearance matters. The perfect arrangement will not only set the mood, but it will also enhance the backdrop for creating a picture perfect wedding.
Myrna, a top florist at the Flower Barrel in Belton, Missouri, has over 35 years of experience creating magnificent arrangements. “An experienced florist will know what works together in terms of color, shapes, and longevity,” says Myrna, who peruses home décor magazines and books for inspiration. “Florists often follow what’s going on in the interior design world,” she continues. However, she encourages her clients to come with a theme or photographs to use as a guide in the design process. “Brides are requesting brick reds, deep yellows and sapphires these days.”
For other couples, designing the perfect arrangement transcends color. Floriography, which means the language of flowers, presents the meanings and moods reflected by different species. Myrna says couples, who have done their research, often come in requesting flowers with particular meanings. Charts such as the Los Angeles Flower District’s floriography chart show that red roses represent deep or passionate love, while yellow roses suggest friendship. “A lot of the meanings to flowers come from the Victorian era,” Myrna comments. Combinations of flowers can also be used to evoke special messages. “For example, a red and white rose together signify unity.”
If your pictures will evoke a thousand words, then imagine the statement the flowers alone will make. “Flowers are going to be in your photographs forever,” says Myrna, “so I encourage couples to put some thought into them and buy plenty.” The more the merrier!
